About the League

The Ukrainian Independent Football League brings together 14 teams representing different cities and regions of Ukraine. The competition is built around the principles of regional football, youth development, competitive balance, and the traditions of independent football clubs.

The U19 Division follows the eight-a-side football format, offering a dynamic alternative to traditional eleven-a-side football. With fewer players on the pitch, matches place greater emphasis on movement, technical ability, tactical flexibility, and quick decision-making.

The league provides a competitive environment where teams from different football communities can meet within a unified championship structure.

02

League Background and Identity

The Ukrainian Independent Football League was established for the 2026/27 season with the aim of bringing together regional football identities within an organised national championship.

The inaugural U19 Division features clubs representing Lviv, Rivne, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, Poltava, and Kyiv regions.

This geographical diversity is an important part of the league’s identity. The championship combines the traditions of local football with a structured competition calendar, creating opportunities for teams to compete against opponents from different parts of Ukraine.

Youth development remains a central element of the league’s philosophy, with the U19 Division placing particular value on teamwork, technical improvement, and competitive experience.

03

Understanding Eight-a-Side Football

Eight-a-side football is a variation of association football in which each team fields eight players, including a goalkeeper and seven outfield players.

Matches are normally played on a pitch smaller than a standard eleven-a-side football field. This creates a more compact playing environment, reduces the distance between players, and increases the frequency of individual involvement in attacking and defensive situations.

Compared with traditional eleven-a-side football, the format encourages faster transitions, shorter passing combinations, and greater positional versatility.

Players are often required to contribute to several phases of play, switching quickly between attacking and defensive responsibilities. The format creates opportunities to experiment with formations including 3-3-1, 2-4-1, and 3-2-2.

04

Competition Structure

The U19 Division features 14 teams competing in a triple round-robin championship. Each team faces every other opponent three times during the season.

The first two meetings provide one home and one away fixture against each opponent. The third meeting adds a further fixture, giving each club 39 matches in total. Across the season, clubs have either 20 home and 19 away fixtures, or 19 home and 20 away fixtures.

The championship consists of 39 rounds, with seven matches per round and 273 matches across the season. Every team plays once in each round.

The competition follows a unified league table, with every result contributing to the overall championship standings. A round is scheduled every four days.

05

Match Format and Regulations

Each fixture is played between two teams of eight players, consisting of one goalkeeper and seven outfield players per side.

Matches consist of two 30-minute halves separated by a 15-minute half-time interval. Total playing time is 60 minutes; the scheduled match duration, including the interval, is 75 minutes.

The playing surface is adapted for eight-a-side football. Matches follow standard football principles concerning goals, fouls, disciplinary decisions, and the responsibilities of match officials, with adaptations suitable for the format.

Detailed provisions on substitutions, offside, pitch dimensions, and disciplinary procedures belong in the league’s regulations. This overview does not specify those provisions.

Tactical Characteristics

The tactical demands of eight-a-side football differ from those of the traditional eleven-a-side game. With fewer players on the pitch, each participant has a greater responsibility for maintaining the team’s structure.

The smaller playing area creates frequent one-on-one situations and encourages rapid transitions between possession and defensive organisation. Teams may use different tactical systems depending on their playing style.

A 3-3-1 formation offers a balanced structure with three defenders, three midfielders, and a central forward. A 2-4-1 system places greater emphasis on midfield possession and controlling central areas. A 3-2-2 formation provides two attacking players while retaining a three-player defensive line.

Tactical flexibility is particularly important because teams must react quickly to changes in possession and adapt their positioning throughout the match.

League Standings and Points System

The league uses a traditional points-based table: three points for a victory, one point for a draw, and zero points for a defeat.

Teams are ranked by total points, followed by goal difference and total goals scored. If these indicators are identical, the website displays the teams in alphabetical order. Head-to-head criteria are not currently applied by the standings engine.

The team finishing first after all 39 rounds is awarded the Ukrainian Independent Football League U19 Division championship title. Only completed matches contribute to the current standings and the goalscorers table.

Youth Development and Competitive Experience

The U19 Division places youth football at the centre of its sporting philosophy. Eight-a-side matches provide an environment in which young players can improve their technical skills, positional awareness, communication, and decision-making.

The compact playing format requires players to remain actively involved throughout the match, contributing to both attacking and defensive phases.

Regular competition against teams from different regions introduces a variety of playing styles and tactical approaches. The league’s structure places importance on sporting discipline, collective responsibility, and long-term player development.

The 2026/27 Season

The 2026/27 campaign introduces the league’s 14-team U19 championship. Its 39 rounds and 273 matches bring together teams from western, central, and northern Ukraine.

The calendar begins on 21 October 2026. Round 2 takes place on 26 October, with subsequent rounds every four days. The final round is scheduled for 23 March 2027.

From round 2, each round features seven fixtures: two at 21:30, two at 22:00, and three at 22:30. All times are local to Kyiv, including seasonal clock changes. Evening appearances are balanced across the clubs.

The competition concludes after every team has completed its 39-match schedule, determining the final standings and the season’s champion. Through its regional diversity, youth-focused structure, and eight-a-side format, the league establishes a distinctive identity within the wider football landscape.
